Songchild Assignment
For this assignment I created an original song titled Have you Ever Been to the Zoo? The lyrics and link to the song are below
Have You Ever Been On a Trip to the Zoo
Here are the links to my songs, as well as their original lyrics. I am providing them in both English and Portugese. I chose to translate my lyrics into portugese because I lived there for a year and thus have a personal connection to Portugal. I thought it would be amazing if some of the first children to potentially listen to and sing my song were from portugal.

English Lyrics
Have you ever been on a trip to the zoo
If you’ve never been to the zoo Then you ought to go on a trip to the zoo
Have you ever seen a giraffe laugh If you’ve never seen a giraffe laugh Then you ought to go on a trip to the zoo
Have you ever seen a square bear If you’ve never seen a square bear Than you ought to go on a trip to the zoo
Have you ever seen a funky monkey If you’ve never seen a funky monkey Than you ought to go on a trip to the zoo
Have you ever seen a flyin lion If you’ve never seen a flyin lion Then you ought to go on a trip to the zoo
Have you ever seen a goat on a boat If you’ve never seen a goat on a boat Than you out to go on a trip to the zoo
So if you’ve never been on a trip to the zoo Put your hat on don’t forget your coat too And then go on your trip to the zoo
Portugese Lyrics
Learning Experiences for Have You Ever Been to the Zoo
Curriculum Goals
The curriculum goals for the song Have You Ever Been to the Zoo are to help children learn/increase their recognition of common animals. A second learning objective would be to introduce children to the concept of rhyming words.
Meaningful Learning and Evaluation
There are several ways an educator can extend children's learning through this song. One possible activity would be to have children use any medium they please to create the animals mentioned in the song. Children can increase their fine motor skills by using materials such as markers and scissors to help them create their art work. As well, this activity will increase children's animal recognition as it will require them to identify the physical characteristics of animals. A teacher can extend this activity for an older age group by having them discuss the characteristics of the animals mentioned in the song, what do they eat? where do they live? etc.
A second activity could consist of children extending the song. Using a collaborative approach children can add lyrics to the song and create their own funny rhyming versus using animals they are familiar with. An older group of children could create their own additions to the lyrics, and than make a music video acting out the various lyrics they have created. This lesson plan changes this activity from a passive one to an active one. Instead of just memorizing the animals and their characteristics; by adding to the song and expressing interest in certain animals children will be engaging in a task that requires active, constructive, cooperative and authentic learning(Crismond, Howland, Jonassen, & Marra, 2008,Page 2). These characteristics all come together to esnure meaningful learning is taking place.
This will really demonstrate meaningful learning as children will be engaging in concrete activities that will reinforce the curriculum goals mentioned above. In particular children will learn alot from using a video camera and receieving video feedback of their work. According to the text video feedback is one of the deepest learning experiences a child can have(Crismond, Howland, Jonassen, & Marra, 2008,Page 214). Allowing children to watch themselves perform will allow them to critically evaluate their work, as well as increase their self-confidence and pride as they see themselves on the screen. Caution does need to be exercised when using video feedback, if it is done incorrectly it can decrease self confidence and be intimidating for students(Crismond, Howland, Jonassen, & Marra, 2008,Page 214).
Music Video
Here is my music video I created using scratch animation. I hope you enjoy!
My Reasoning
I created a song for children about zoo animals, because young children are very curious about animals and I feel it is a fun way to teach them about the different characteristics of various animals. I chose to do a scratch animation because I have grown fond of the program. Although difficult to use at times, it is a fun program where one can create animation. My aim is for children to see my scratch and be inspired to create their own.
When creating this project I relied heavily on the wiki editing web page. It provided me with much needed information on how to format and essentially create my project. Overall I do not feel that songchild is the most appropriate outlet for children to submit their songs. The wiki environment can be challenging to learn if one has never experienced it before. Even with websites devoted to teaching people how to use it, one must go through a lot of trial and error. I do not feel that young children will be able to record their songs an create a page using the programs that songchild supports. I think the idea of creating and sharing ones original music with others around the world is interesting but I feel there might be an easier way to accomplish this. If a regular webpage instead of a wiki was used then children might be able to post their information much in the same way one would post a blog entry. Although I like the concept, I cannot see myself using songchild for personal use. Word Count-263
